3e Consulting Engineers supported the Esteem consortium’s winning bid, to provide 22 new schools/ academies in Hull with an overall project value in excess of £450m.

The engineering support provided by 3e included the following key services:

Structural Engineering – Steel & concrete framed solution options, including suspended piled foundations and ground floor slab.

Civil Engineering – Ground modelling, cut and fill evaluations, highways and sustainable drainage solutions incorporating flood mitigation.

Environmental/ Geotechnical Engineering – The design and implementation of a bespoke ground investigation to address the geotechnical strength of the ground and evaluation and mitigation of ground contamination.

The Archbishop Sentamu Academy is one of two example schools provided in the first phase of the BSF scheme.

As an academy, the school provides many specialisms, including sport, performing arts and engineering.

The sports provision includes a large internal gymnasium and state of the art changing facilities. Externally, to the north of the school a large covered viewing terrace looks out over the many playing pitches, including all weather surfaces. 3e knowledge and experiences in the sport and stadium sector was of great advantage in determining the most advantageous design and construction solutions.

The performing arts provision includes a fully serviced theatre, a seating auditorium over two floors and a fully integrated control room and sound studio. Large suspended spans were created to support the viewing galleries using lattice steel frames and bespoke pre-cast concrete elements.

The large central, full height Agora located at the heart of the school was developed to create multi-use space, incorporating assembly and dining hall, performing arts and winter garden that incorporates 15 mature trees in mobile planters. The roof over was created using a clear ETFE ‘bubble’ membrane, suspended over a light tubular steel frame structure spanning the 15m x 80m roof space.
