3e have been commissioned by Vertex Systems to design a 28m x 48m portal building used to house a process plant for a mining company. The building is to be wholly manufactured from a single size light gauge steel channel. Due to the remote location and relative difficulty procuring other building materials a mobile manufacturing plant consisting of a containerised roll-forming machine is used to produce the necessary steel framework. The main supporting structure is a series of lattice portal frames. Lattice truss purlins are used to span between the frames to support the insulated roof panels. Walls are formed using vertical lattice wind girders with light steel wall panels spanning between to allow fixing of insulated wall panels.
Key Design Challenges:
Mongolia is subject to earthquakes and as such a seismic design had to be undertaken.
The height of the building and slenderness of the building make stability challenging.
A single section size restricts design approach.
Design needs to be simple to manufacture and erect.
