The development which was completed in 2008 is on a site with an escarpment to one boundary and the River Stour to another boundary and bisecting the site. An enabling works contract was undertaken to prepare the site for development which comprised of demolishing some of the existing buildings, recycling suitable materials for re-use, carrying out cut / fill operations and installing a concrete panelled wall adjacent to part of the river.
The main contract comprised ground improvement works, constructing a 78,000 sq ft development with associated car parking/hardstandings. A sustainable drainage system with porous surfacing was installed to one area of the car par park and a new bridge was constructed over the river to access the development.
The contract also included retaining / partial refurbishment of an existing listed building and the formation of a carpet museum.
There were a number of ecological and environmental constraints present on the site which restricted the sequence of the works, the layout of the development and the materials used. It is understood that this was the first Wm Morrison’s supermarket to attain a BREEAM excellent rating.
