3e worked with GMI Construction on the £22M regeneration of Clay Cross Town Centre. The project comprised a 60,000 sq ft Eco-store for Tesco, a PFS, 11 retail units, a Medical Centre and a bus station along with ancilliary facilities.
The site topography required a major re-profiling exercise including the removal of around 100,000 m3 of spoil. 3e carried out an extensive geo-environmental investigation at an early stage. This indicated that there was a large volume of ash on site. It was proposed to sell this ash to a concrete block manufacturer thereby producing a green solution and negotiations were at an advanced stage. However the downturn in the housing market reduced the demand for blocks and the proposal fell through. In spite of this an alternative green solution was found whereby colliery spoil was removed from site and deposited in a former opencast site which was in need of fill prior to construction.
Following on from the re-profiling, shallow mine-workings were grouted, a number of mineshafts were capped and the building areas vibro-treated.
